Consumer Directed Personal Assistants

A Consumer Directed Personal Assistant (CDPA) is hired by the Consumer or their Designated Representative to assist the Consumer with activities of daily living and to facilitate the consumers full inclusion in their community. The CDPAS is designed to maximize the authority of people with disabilities to manage their own lives. As a CDPA you will be a key element in making this goal a reality. By accepting a position as a CDPA you are agreeing to work within this unique framework. Here are important things to consider when accepting a position for a consumer on CDPAS:

  • The Consumer is your employer, they hire, train, supervise, schedule and also have the ability to fire their CDPA’s.
  • The Long Island Center for Independent Living is the Fiscal Intermediary responsible for payroll, compliance and benefits on behalf of the consumer.
  • The hours that the consumers is approved for are approved through Medicaid, either a Managed Care Organization or Nassau County DSS.
  • The CDPA must be over 18 years old, legal to work in US, have a yearly, physical, TB Test, and proof of immunizations at time of employment.
