As we all continue to digest the devastating cuts and actions that were in this year’s budget, we are also faced with the looming threat of even more potential harm. This past weekend, Governor Cuomo’s Budget Director, Robert Mujica, announced that the state is facing a potential budget gap of $13 billion as a result of COVID-19. As a result of this, he is implementing the powers provided to him through the budget, that allow him to make unilateral cuts, unless the Legislature provides an alternative spending plan within 10 days of his announced plan to meet the new spending target he has set.
As a result of this effort, eight NYS Senators are joining together to brief New Yorkers on the situation, including potential actions that can be taken throughout the remainder of the Legislative year. While the meeting will not focus exclusively on Medicaid, it is important for these elected representatives to hear about the importance of safeguarding Medicaid, and also for us to hear about the plans that our allies in the Legislature are considering to make it out of this without even deeper cuts, and possibly undoing some of what has been done.
