Action Alert: Tell Lawmakers, “Stripping New Yorkers of healthcare will only lead to a sicker New York”

Via Make the Road NY and Community Service Society

On July 4, 2025, President Trump signed H.R.1, also known as the “One Big Beautiful Bill Act” (OBBBA). The New York State Department of Health estimated that as a result of H.R.1, 1.5 million New Yorkers, citizens and immigrants alike, will lose health insurance as the law is implemented over the next several years.

H.R.1 will not only affect those who are directly losing coverage, but will impact our community as a whole, because when people lose health insurance, healthcare costs rise for everyone. Many of those losing coverage are younger and healthier people whose participation in health insurance helps stabilize insurance pools. But without them, premiums will increase, and more people will continue to become uninsured.

Additionally, hospitals and healthcare providers will also feel the impact. Reducing coverage will lead to more uncompensated care, which could force hospitals, especially those in rural areas, to cut services or close altogether. This not only continues to widen the disparity in access to care, but it also puts thousands of jobs at risk and weakens the healthcare systems our communities rely on.

New York State needs to act NOW to ensure that those who are set to lose coverage remain insured.

Call Speaker Carl Heastie, Senate Leader Andrea Stewart-Cousins, and Governor Hochul and demand they protect immigrant New Yorkers’ access to the health coverage they already have.

Stripping New Yorkers of healthcare will only lead to a sicker New York.
