BREAKING: New Yorkers would make up over 10 percent (1.5 million) of the 16 million Americans at risk of becoming uninsured due to federal threats to Medicaid and the ACA.
On May 22nd, the Republicans in the U.S. House voted for the biggest cuts to health care since the inception of Medicaid and the Affordable Care Act. This cut passed by a one-vote margin with a final vote count of 215 to 214.
Here’s how New York, its health care system, and its residents would be affected by the House bill if it becomes law:
1.5 million New Yorkers could lose their Medicaid and Essential Plan health coverage and become uninsured.
This loss in federal funding and the shifted cost to the State to keep New Yorkers covered will cause the State to lose $13.5 billion annually.
Hospitals in New York would lose $1.3 billion annually in funding, which may force many struggling safety-net and rural hospitals to close.
New bureaucratic barriers—like work requirements and bi-annual renewals—would result in erroneous terminations and denials of coverage and hurdles to getting care.
People who are sick, older, or have disabilities would have a harder time getting care due to higher cost-sharing that is unaffordable for many workers.
Health insurance premium costs on the New York State of Health marketplace would rise by as much as 38 percent, or $2,700 a year for a couple.
There’s still time to fight back.
This bill will be voted on in the Senate before it circulates back to the House or to Trump’s desk.
New York Congressional Republicans voted for a bill that would leave New York with the lion’s share of coverage and funding losses.
Any New York Republican members of Congress had the power to stop this bill, which passed by a one-vote margin, but did not. They all voted in favor of these egregious cuts, except for Andrew Garbarino, who supposedly “slept” through the vote.
You can help hold these Congress Members accountable for voting for enormous health care cuts.

Act now! We’ve included a sample script for calling these key Congress members.
“My name is ____, and I am a New Yorker worried about federal threats to health care.
Proposed cuts to Medicaid and the Affordable Care Act will have a devastating impact on New Yorkers and our economy.
Over 8 million New Yorkers—seniors, people with disabilities, children, pregnant women, low-wage workers, and small business owners—are counting on you to protect Medicaid and the ACA.
Please guarantee that you will protect your constituents and vote no on any cuts to federal health care programs. Thank you.”
