July 3, 2025 – A budget is a moral document, creating the framework for how a government will provide public services. H.R. 1, which Republican leaders have dubbed “beautiful,” is anything but beautiful for people with low income and people with disabilities who need health coverage. It will strip affordable health insurance coverage away from millions of Americans who don’t have other coverage, including 1.5 million people here in New York.
Medicaid and the Essential Plan are lifelines that keep people healthy, fiscally stable, and living with dignity in their communities. Dozens of New Yorkers have told us this through their personal stories.
This bill represents a massive transfer of financial responsibility from the federal government to states. New York State will lose over $10 billion in federal funding that presently helps provide coverage for eligible people and maintains an accessible health care delivery system for us all. We stand ready to lend the perspective of New Yorkers who have Medicaid for their insurance coverage as state policymakers take on this daunting task.
We’ve shared data and personal stories (more stories here) with each member of New York’s congressional delegation and we condemn the callous lack of courage demonstrated by New York’s House Republicans who failed to protect their constituents from the disaster that awaits them when this bill is implemented. We are grateful for the members of congress who continue to stand up for what they know is right – upholding a government that will provide for the needs of its people – as well as the New York State government officials who are already working tirelessly to protect the programs New Yorkers rely on.
